Killer Asian Horror Films

Strange Circus (2005) (Japan) - A young woman, Mitsuko catches her parents having sex and is subsequently forced by her rapey, controlling father and her beloved mother to watch the two have sex while she is while locked in a cello case equipped with a peep-hole.  When the poor girl's mother dies, her creepy father forces her to take on the role that his late wife formerly filled, performing her "sexual" duties.  As a result, the girl attempts suicide.  This story within a story is being penned by a wheelchair-bound author, Taeko, during the movie.  The same actress that portrays Taeko also portrays Misuko's mother.  Taeko is assigned a new assistant, Yuji, a very effeminate guy, and the two begin a romantic relationship.  Soon the real identities of Taeko and Yuji come into question.

I'm going to watch this now!  If you wanna watch with me so we can discuss...

Tokyo Psycho (2004) (Japan) - Based on a true story, Sachiko Kokubu, an attractive Tokyo design agency owner, finds her life horrifically interrupted when she begins to be the recipient of scraps of paper sewn together with piano wire with creepy messages from an "admirer".  One message was creepy enough, but as additional messages begin to come to her, she tries to discover who her stalker might be behind the shadows.

The Cat (2011) (Japan) - A young woman works as a pet groomer in a local pet shop. A kitty cat named Bidanyi comes to visit the store in which she works. The following day, Bidanyi's human is found dead in an elevator.

This one's for you D!  D knows exactly who D is!
D loves cats more than one should and that's awesome by my standards!

You can watch The Cat free here!

Ghastly (2011) (South Korea) - An emotionally wounded woman finds a medium to assist her with her psychological woes.  Being infertile has caused her much suffering and she seeks to find a solution to her dilemma through the help of the aforementioned medium.
To make a long story short (and you can watch it anyway...for free online.  I'll post a link.), she ends up burying an orphan in a pot used to bury kimchi (a Korean side dish made from veggies and spices), during winter for storage (sort of like how American can tomatoes and hot peppers in those Ball  jars), and obviously, being buried in a pot kills him.  Subsequently, an apparent haunting seems to ensue and things get very unpleasant.

Dumplings (2004) (China) - Aunt Mei is a reputable cook, who is known for her home-made rejuvenation dumplings, based on a "special recipe" prepared with unknown ingredients.  A former actress, who is beginning to show early signs of aging, Mrs. Li, visits Aunt Mei to feast on her renowned dumplings in a pursuit to combat her loss of youth so she might again be attractive to her wandering husband.

A Tale of Two Sisters (2003) - I usually have difficulty getting immersed and more than half-heatedly following movies that are subtitled.  However, I can deal with subtitles if absolutely necessary.  In this case, it was definitely necessary so I could watch the South Korean film, "A Tale of Two Sisters".

If you are into psychological horror thrillers, definitely see it.  You won't know which end is up until the, well, the end.  An American version was released in, 2009 entitled, The Uninvited.  Two starring roles in the film were played by Emily Browning and Elizabeth Banks.

Anyway, A Tale of Two Sisters is the story of two sisters who are hospitalized in a psychiatric facility after the tragic and untimely death of their beloved mother.  The girls return home to their dad only to find he's got a new flame and she is beautiful, mean, and cold, and definitely doesn't understand the girls' struggle.  You will see that it has unexpected twists and turns, and is definitely unique.  You almost don't even need the subtitles to follow it.

Though I have already posted a review on this, I did not, however, have a link to watch the movie for free streaming and I do now so if you don't have Netflix, you are in luck, too!

You can watch A Tale of Two Sisters below.
Its divided into Part 1 & 2 in the respective players below!

Unexpected Horror Plot Twists

I am going to discuss a few movies without giving away the endings if you haven't seen them that have strange, confusing, and clever plot twists. I'll link the ones that are available free online and show you where to watch the ones that aren't without paying a mint! They are in no necessary order from best to worst, this is just a list.

1.   Gothika (2003) - a film which stars Halle Berry and Robert Downey Jr. Halle portrays a psychiatrist who gets in a car accident nobody bears witness to and she winds up waking up in the very asylum in which she practices. She has to figure out what the hell happened, why she got there, and who committed the horrifying crime for which she is accused.

Gothika is available on Netflix.

Gothika is also available on Amazon & Amazon Prime, Vudu, and iTunes.

Its also available below if you don't have an Amazon Prime Subscription.

If you sign up with the link I just posted, you get 30 days free and you can cancel at any time during or at the end of the 30 days if you choose not to keep your subscription.

2.  The Uninvited (2009) - Emily Browning stars in this thriller, which is the American version of the 2003 South Korean film, A Tale of Two Sisters, in which she returns home from a psychiatric hospital visit which resulted following the death of her mother.  When she arrives home, Anna is shocked to discover that her father has recently gotten engaged to Rachel (Elizabeth Banks), her mother's former nurse.

Anna's suspicions about Rachel are quickly realized to be true when her deceased mother contacts her from the beyond the grave to warn the girl and her sister to try and convince their father that Rachel is not who he thinks she is.

You can watch The Univited on YouTube, MGo, Vudu, Amazon, Best Buy's Cinema Now, and iTunes.

Its Korean version, A Tale of Two Sisters is available on Netflix.

3.  Lost Highway (1997) - This one was really weird.  I still don't think I get it all these years later.  Fred Madison (Bill Pullman), a musician, receives a message from an unknown man on his front door intercom saying, "Dick Laurent is dead." When he looks out his window nobody is there, but he hears the faint sound of police sirens.

The next day, there is a random package on his front doorstep with a video tape of inside his house.  After their evening lovins seesion, Fred sees Renee's face as that of a pale old man. Another weird tape shows up showing inside their house and frames of he and his wife in bed sleeping. They call the cops, but two detectives Al and Ed say that there's nothing they can do about it, but agree to keep an eye out.

That evening, Fred and Renee go out to a party held by Andy where Fred meets a creepy old guy played by Robert Blake clas in all black.  Oddly, his face looks like the one he saw on his wife's head after a lovins session the other night.

He actually tells Fred that he is at his house right now. Fred phones his house and the voice of the creepy guy answers his phone while he's standing right in front of him.  Fred walks away and asks Andy who the guy is and and he says he's a friend of Dick Laurent.

The next day, another random tape arrives and Fred watches it alone. I can't say what happens next, but its a really weird flick and you have no idea what's going on until the end.  I still haven't figured it out, but it was entertaining and has a killer soundtrack, which includes music from NIN, Marilyn Manson, and David Bowie.

You can watch it on Netflix, Amazon, Amazon Prime, Blockbuster, and Daily Motion

4.  The Attic (2008) - After her family moves into a new house, Emma starts to see visions of her dead twin sister. For her, the attic of her Victorian house may deliver the answer to her questions, but when she starts going up there, she starts getting all crazy.

You can watch it free below!

Watch Horror on Amazon With Your Free $5 Credit Tonight!

From Hell - Johnny Depp is a detective, much like an FBI profiler today, who chases not only Jack the Ripper, but he chases the dragon at Opium dens as well.  He enjoys solving crimes, Opium, and Absinthe, and oh, yeah, a hot little hooker played by Heather Gram, Mary Kelly!

The Uninvited -  is actually the American version (remake) of the Korean horror flick, A Tale of Two Sisters.  Anna, portrayed by Emily Browning is released from a psychiatric hospital after attempting suicide due to her terminally ill mother being incinerated in a fire on the grounds of her home (a boathouse). Nearly a year later, she has no memory of this.  She and her sister believe their mom is trying to tell them something about her death from beyond.  There is an obscure nurse in the home getting jiggy with the dad, and that's an interesting twist as well.

Stir of Echoes - Kevin Bacon and the chick from Law and Order are a couple who end up with some issues. Kevin Bacon's character likes to dig through the floor of their home without a shirt, and drink lots of orange juice. Why, you ask? Because, the spirit of a dead mentally disabled girl is communicating with him from beyond after he is hypnotized at a get-together with he and his wife's friend, played by Illeana Douglas, who is into that sort of thing. The spirit appears to him, and commands for him to dig, so he's got to dig. I'm grateful for that, because, Mr. Bacon, without a shirt, make the movie alone good enough to eat, I mean watch!

The Skeleton Key - Kate Hudson gets down on the Bayou. She is a home health care nurse for an elderly man and his wife, the old broad from the Notebook, in Louisiana. There is lots of strange things going on in this house. But, this is the sort of thing the bayou brings, strange country folk, voodoo, and lots of buried secrets....
