Ghostly Messenger Movies

I really like horror thrillers that have a ghost trying to relay a message to the living.  You can redo this story line a million times and its always different and can be a unique story.  I am going to share some of these types movies, most of which I will list where to watch them online free.  I will link them if they are available for viewing.

Stir of Echoes (1999) - After being hypnotized by his sister in law, a man begins seeing haunting visions of a girl's ghost and a mystery begins to unfold around her.  This one is one of my favorites.  Its freaky and the story is good.  It ends up surfacing at the very end and you have no idea what's up for a long time!  I love this movie so much.  Its sick and twisted, but you will love it, too!  I have a mild crush on Kevin Bacon, especially in this film, where he doesn't wear a shirt that much.  He has to dig!

What Lies Beneath (2000) - This supernatural thriller, directed by Robert Zemeckis, stars Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer as a seemingly ordinary couple who experience a strange haunting that uncovers dark and deeply hidden secrets.  The haunting is effecting the wife and she feels like she's going crazy.  I really liked this one.  It was unique and startling.

The Devil's Backbone (2001) - Little Carlos, a boy of 12, arrives at a boy's home subsequent to his father's death in the Spanish Civil War.  He realizes the orphanage is haunted and has hidden secrets a ghost prompts him to find out.  The tone in this film creeps me out and its truly chilling.  I highly recommend this one.  You will either love or hate it, though.

The Orphanage (2007) - A woman brings her family back to the orphanage for the disabled, where consequently, she grew up.  Her son begins to speak with a new imaginary friend.  This one is really spooky and builds a great story while you figure out what's going on along with the protagonist.

Shutter (2008) - Happy newlyweds keep capturing ghostly images in pictures after an accident. They believe the incidents might be related to the tragedy so they look into it and find out what the secret really is!  You will be pissed at one of the characters in the movie.

The Others (2001) - A woman, who lives in a creepy, purposely dark house with her children who have a condition that makes them hypersensitive to sunlight.  She feels her home may be haunted and can't leave, because her kids can't go outside.  This one is good and you won't know what's going on up until the very end.  Its got a very well developed story line.

Stigmata (1999) - This is a weird one that I really loved, because its unique.  Its got elements of haunting, The Stigmata, and possession.

A priest from the Vatican (Gabriel Byrne), who I have a mild older man-crush on, is dispatched to Brazil (Sao Paulo) to investigate the manifestation of the face of the Virgin Mary on a building. While he's visiting on his charge from the church, he discovers a statue of The Virgin that bleeds tears bleeding tears in a small town outside of the city.

Simultaneously, a woman in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania begins to manifest the wounds of Christ's crucifixion (Stigmata).  The Vatican Investigator helps and cares for her, while investigating her affliction.  She may, in fact, be inhabited by a ghost, in whom the Father is quite familiar.

I Love the Victorian (Gothic) Horror Genre!

I don't know about you guys, but my favorite horror genre to read and watch has to be Victorian/Gothic Horror, which I classify as horror reading and viewing from the late 1800's and the early 1900's.

Some of my favorite horror flix, mostly adapted from novels in said era, are set in Victorian England or in North America during the Victorian/Gothic era.  From the popularity of Bram Stoker's novel, Dracula to the popular play Sweeney Todd - Demon Barber of Fleet Street, I have to say, this genre is more realistic and terrifying than any other.  Of course, I have to mention Edgar Allen Poe, the man that got me reading for enjoyment in the fifth grade. Not only did he get me reading, but he got me writing.  Not long after, H.P. Lovecraft got me to love science fiction infused with horror.

The notions and backdrops for these stories come from a time when science was in its infancy and we began to realize that science fiction, which can translate quite well into horror has no limits!

Some of my favorite stories that either come from this genre or are set in this genre are, of course...

1.  Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), Dracula (1958) & Dracula (1979)

2.  Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994)

3.  Sleepy Hollow (1999) (not really Victorian, but it fits the genre very closely).

4.  From Hell (2001)

5.  The Others (2001)

6.  The Woman in Black (2012)

7.  Masters of Horror (mini movie short) - Poe's The Black Cat (watch it here, free.)

8.  Masters of Horror (mini movie short) - Lovecraft's Dreams in the Witch House (watch it here, free.)

(This movie is set in modern times, but is a modern adaptation of a Victorian novel.)

9.  The Turn of the Screw (adapted from Henry James' 1898 Novel) - Its got many versions and I can't seem to locate the best one from the seventies/early eighties online, but it was creepy!

10.  The Wolfman (2010) - Though werewolf movies are not my favorite, this movie was the best adaptation and probably one of the better werewolf movies I have seen in quite some time aside from The Howling franchise, which of course, is not Victorian or Gothic in nature.
