Momento Mori - Remember Your Mortality - Victorian Death Photos
Momento Mori literally means remember your mortality in Latin.
Momento Mori is a commonly referred to genre of art that most likely began its use during the Black Plague era in the dark ages in Europe. It came from a fearful people with spirituality and religious ties, but none to science, just superstition and the fears that come along with such matters. Paintings of the dead depicted as alive and powerful, often as skeletons, very dead looking, were painted in a fearful setting where they were coming for you, but it morphed into something quite wonderful, powerful, and dare I even say positive by Victorian times, and perhaps a tad bit earlier than that, before the Civil War.
